Career Development & Growth  in the Contemporary Business Environment

Globalization has resulted in many technological advancements that employees incorporate into their skill set in order to maintain the competitive edge for the organization as well as develop career advancement within the organization.  Career growth involves programs that are set in place by initiatives of employers and employees to enhance their expertise and familiarize them with the recent developments. Globalization has brought many technological changes and developments. Research and development are a key facet that organizations must maintain to fuel their business processes with new technology that will make their functionality effective and efficient. One of the main advantages of career growth activities within the organization is talent retention. Continuous growth opportunities for employees will result in them not seeking opportunities in other organizations.  In addition, these growth opportunities are also important to align to the changes of the business world as a result of globalization.

To promote career growth organizations must focus on effective training and development plans for employees. However, in a globalized organization managing training and development to cater to the growth requirements of the employer and employees is an intricate task (Taylor, 2005). This is because training and development requires an organization to make large investments in order to develop their workforce. Therefore, in a globalized organization, training and development must be common to all the subsidiaries. However, when an organization is dispersed across the world, the individuals within these countries might have different skills and knowledge gaps. Therefore, employing the same training content might not be appropriate.  Organizations must focus on the education level, language barriers and literacy rate of different countries in order to devise proper training and development content.  Since organizations invest large amount of money on training and development, they must ensure that these trainings are conducted in an effective manner with the effects of these trainings evaluated. Due to the advancements of technology and globalization, learning in a digital platform can be utilized. However, technology in certain countries might not be as strong as that of the other and individuals in certain countries might not be very technologically savvy when compared to other countries.  Therefore, HR professionals must consider this challenge as it is a core function of human resource management.
